Plymouth Venues

When Sir Frances Drake decided to finish his game of bowls before addressing the pressing issue of the Spanish Armada the dye was cast for a city that doesn’t do things by halves. Not only does Plymouth have Europe's largest natural harbour, in Plymouth Sound, but it is also home to one of the largest naval bases and an incredible array of world class water sport activities; sailing and wind-surfing in particular. With a great many more activities and attractions in the city itself, it is unsurprising that Plymouth venues are in demand for many different leisure, entertainment and corporate purposes. Bowling remains as popular as ever and there are venues for that too.

For those who prefer to conquer the waves using wind power alone there are marinas and the Royal Western Yacht Club who stage international ocean yacht racing competitions. There are many Plymouth venues where sailing, and the culture around it, takes centre stage.

The city centre is almost completely pedestrianised and has a thriving commercial heart; where shopping is the main attraction and new developments lend a cosmopolitan air through pavement cafes and stylish bars. Plymouth may not be quite Manhattan yet but it does have its own Central Park, a large green space for picnics, walking and jogging, and containing one of the largest Plymouth venues, the home stadium of Plymouth Argyle Football Club. Plans are in place for a new leisure centre too.

A short walk from the city centre is Plymouth Hoe, a wonderful natural outcrop of land which gives excellent views over the Sound. It was from here that the Spanish Armada came into view and interrupted the bowling. At the foot of Plymouth Hoe is Tinside Pool, a classic lido which has been redeveloped to include numerous leisure options. There are hotels close to all the most popular attractions and commercial operations in the city and a great many of them provide ideal Plymouth venues for business conferencing, weddings, and open functions such as product launches, live performances, and exhibitions.
